The Bible says God inhabits the praises of his people. Praise and thanksgiving allow us to see backwards. We can look back and see God’s faithfulness in the past and that allows us to receive the hope we have in Christ for our future. Praise and thanksgiving remind us of who God is…he is our Creator, Savior. “For nothing is impossible with God!” (Luke 1:37).
Prayers of praise and thanks certainly open us up to recognizing God’s presence and hearing his voice. So, try this today: only offer prayers of praise and thanks. Go through a whole day without asking, complaining, questioning, doubting…only give god thanks and praise. Do it as an act of spiritual discipline. As you do so, be open to whatever God may have you to see or hear from him. As you do this keep in mind that praise and thanks are not dependent on your feelings. You may not “feel” like praise and thanks, but that does not mean you should wait to offer praise and thanks. Just may be, when we feel like it the least, is our praise and thanksgiving most meaningful.
Reflect on this and consider using it as a breath prayer today: “give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” 1 Thessalonians 5:18.
